Learner Story: Going Back to School with Support from Workforce Edge

When Jaqueline Hess at Quest Diagnostics started pursuing higher education, she set off on a journey without knowing where the map would lead. Thanks to her employer’s education benefit offered through Workforce Edge, the first step was simple. By putting one foot in front of the other and trusting herself, Jaqueline learned more than just her course material as she pursued her degree—she learned about herself and discovered her true professional aspirations.
Jaqueline recently spoke about her experience using Workforce Edge to pursue her goals.
Was there a moment that you knew you wanted to further your education? If so, describe that moment.
I started going back to school a little later than traditional students. I worked a lot of entry level jobs, but I always knew I was capable of more. When I finally decided to go back to school it was a big step, but I’ve never looked back.
What do you feel was holding you back from taking the first step and starting your education?
Money was a big deterrent for me. I didn’t think I could afford school, and I knew my family couldn’t afford to send me to school. That’s why my company’s partnership with Workforce Edge is such a big deal for me.
How did you learn about Workforce Edge?
Through my company’s intranet.
How is Workforce Edge supporting you as you pursue your goals?
Any time I’ve ever had a question about the process, someone is there via online chat, over the phone, or through email. If I need help, it’s right at my fingertips.
What’s your favorite thing about Workforce Edge?
I love how easy and straightforward it is to use. I’ve had a few learning curves along the way, but for a first-time tuition reimbursement receiver, it’s pretty user-friendly.
What advice do you have for someone who’s thinking about pursuing education but doesn’t know where to begin?
Just start. You can start anywhere and end up in a completely different spot. If you asked me six years ago, “Do you see yourself working in a laboratory?” I would have laughed and said, “Ew, no!” But I learned along the way through trial and error what I am really passionate about and what’s not for me. Just start, learn some things along the way, and you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be.
Do you have advice for coworkers interested in pursuing education through Workforce Edge specifically?
Yes! Take advantage of Workforce Edge. Some programs you can access without having to pay anything out of pocket through Quest. For me, it was free education!
